Going Gluten-Free Just Because? Here’s What You Need to Know

With so much information on the internet and social media about going gluten-free, you may have thought about researching why people go gluten-free and what the health benefits are of a gluten-free lifestyle.

What once was a medical necessity for a select few has now become a trend for the masses.  People have been switching to gluten-free diets based on what they see and hear from other people rather than switching to combat their own gluten intolerance.  We’re here to shed some light on a gluten-free diet and why you would want to switch to gluten-free.

Gluten Free Health Benefits

There is only one group of people that a gluten-free diet is proven to provide health benefits to – those who are sensitive to gluten.  Many people are switching to a gluten-free diet because they’ve read claims that it helps with weight, energy, and an overall healthier lifestyle. There are no proven health benefits of going gluten-free to those who are not gluten sensitive or gluten intolerant.

While it may seem trendy to go gluten-free, it’s important to set realistic expectations about why you’re going gluten-free.  If you’re not gluten intolerant or gluten sensitive, most people are not going to see any health benefits of going gluten-free. Going into a gluten-free diet with high expectations of improved health if you’re not sensitive to gluten is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

In fact, going completely gluten-free can deprive you of some important nutrients if you’re not carefully following a well-rounded gluten-free diet.  Many foods that contain gluten are also fortified with vitamins and minerals that are important for our overall health.

What Is Gluten Sensitivity?

Gluten is a common protein found in wheat and barley – gluten is found in countless foods and is what helps give food its shape.  It’s hard to come across a food that doesn’t have gluten in it unless it’s specifically made to be gluten-free. People that are sensitive or intolerant to gluten aren’t able to handle that protein, even in small amounts.  Even the slightest amount of gluten can cause serious trouble.

If someone with celiac disease ingests gluten it can damage their small intestines and cause a host of other health issues.  You can be tested for celiac disease with a simple blood test if you think you may be gluten intolerant.

If you do think that you’re having an issue with gluten, consult a doctor before going completely gluten-free.  Once you cut out gluten from your diet, it can be difficult to test if you’re gluten intolerant or gluten sensitive.  Be sure to get tested before you start your gluten-free diet to be sure.
